Giant Hadron

Captain Hadron's transitions to giant-size required a lot of control and meant that he could not utilize other abilities when doing so, and even his transformations back to other sizes were time consuming when grown to his maximum height.

Wow. Even with the deadline of last month's Challenge, I did not get this finished on time.

And having already dawdled for over two years, the first of my Giant Hadrons is finished (yes, I have another! That could be another terminally slow painting log in the making...).

It is done at last. Not my best painting by any stretch, but what surprised me is how difficult painting a big model is. I don't think I have completed painting on a model this size before now. I guess painters get habituated to working at a given scale and so stepping beyond that is going outside of your comfort zone, which may be part of why this has taken so long to complete; that and I am a notoriously slow painter of course!

Not my best work, but hopefully I have learned some lessons from tackling this big model; lessons that will inform other big models eventually.

In the new Supreme Edition rules Giant Hadron is a Powerhouse; what this means is that we hope he lives up to his stature, and unlike the previous edition he can stay giant-size for the whole game (he was limited to 1-2 Rounds previously).

We are still gathering feedback on the new rules, so let us know what you think of our biggest Powerhouse, who gets Size Matters against all other Supremes as things currently stand. With the importance of dice pooling to achieve SFX, that is a good advantage to have.

Hopefully this month's painting slump will not continue into next month, and I hope that I can start to overhaul the total painted minis I achieved in 2012, especially with so many new Pulp City minis on the horizon: Green Emperor and Terror Cotta Warrior; V.H. and Blacksmith; Red Bella and Primates of Power; Papa Zombie and Comte Vendredi; new Starter sets and much more besides.

Time to get those last few currently remaining minis done then: Doom Train; Night Fright and Leech; Green Serpent; Pulp Monster.

Giant Hadron & Hobby Update

Blue repainted to turquoise
I have not painted much at all in recent months. There have been a few distractions, some good and some that are just time-draining and ultimately have not served much purpose except distraction itself, so consequently it is time for me to re-focus.

In the column marked 'Good Distractions' has been working with Maciej and Devon to develop Pulp City Supreme Edition. We have over-hauled the game engine to hopefully open up what can be done with the game. This has been time intensive to say the least and has probably occupied hundreds of hours for each of us: of individual writing; revisions; and then group debate via email and Skype. More on that when I can.

Also the new Pulp City website is near to arriving. It will be different, it is different to the old site, but has the advantage that the Pulp City Team can easily edit and add content, something that was not easily done previously. Already new fluff is uploaded and there is more to come.

Old blue colour
Okay back to my hobby stuff. My Hadrons just have not been finished. The latest drag besides loss of time to other stuff, is that I was struggling with the blue areas, especially on the large version. So I resolved that the next Pulp City minis I complete has to be this set, and to that end I have over-painted the blue with turquoise which has had a first rough highlight and already I am happier. Hopefully these will get done!

Giant Hadron Update [2]

This is the second update of Work In Progress on the Hadrons; as you can see I am slapping on the colours on all 3 together in order to try and preserve some uniformity as I go. The highlighting and shading will likely see differences, especially in amount applied and levels of contrast, but the basic colours are blocked out for now.

Giant Hadron offers some really big surface areas, so my base coat brush has been used predominantly on him. Compared to some of the 'big' Pulp City models on 40mm bases, he is not over-detailed, meaning the greatest challenge will be in achieving satisfactory highlighting and shading on a much bigger mini than I am used to painting.

As for the colour scheme? Well 3 of my favourite characters over the years have been Giant Man/Ant-Man/Goliath/Hank Pym, Colossal Boy (Legion of Superheroes; in his Dave Cockrum and Giffen and Lightle era outfits) and Atlas (from Thunderbolts). What all 3 have in common is that they have red and blue (or blue and red) costumes. add to that that I have chosen red and blue for my Hero palette theme, and it was a no-brainer to look to continue that.

Giant Hadron Update

Okay, after on and off de-flashing and cleaning up the Giant Hadron 'mini', and assembly of a base to hopefully fit in with the aesthetic of my Pulp City collection, Giant Hadron has now been glued to said base. See right for a size comparison picture using Lady Cyburn.

I plan to update this 'thread' as an ongoing blog Project Log.

The model was pretty cleanly cast with no bubbles, but it did need cleaning up, and I variously used my scalpel, an emery board, and a couple of needle files. Mostly I just had to gently carve away excess resin.

There are one or two areas that need to Green Stuff filling, but that will hopefully be quite straightforwards.

I have already (some months ago) started work on Captain Hadron and Mini Hadron, so when I get around to painting Giant Hadron I will pick up the work on those two and try and paint all three at the same time.

Working On...

I picked up a parcel at the Post Office depot today; inside were some minis, some cards and a book. And among those minis these:

Giant Hadron is a 'Direct Only' item from the Pulp Monsters web store; there will soon be more Direct Only items to add to this. He comes with a plain 80mm base (far right of picture), but I'll be using a Fenris base (far left) with self-made inserted texture in order to match the giant Reaper ape I painted a while back. The Captain Hadron and Mini Hadron are included to give a sense of scale. I am hoping to crack into this project in the next few days. The Challenge grows anew!
