New: ANDROIDA and DR. WARLOCK

Want new releases? Pulp City has got 'em!

New in store this week are a new sculpt for Androida and the Supreme Genesis character called Dr. Warlock. We are really happy to finally resume what will be regular releases for the range, starting with these two great Supremes.

First up is Androida (new) – an updated version of the classic Supreme Hero. Androida was one of the first models sculpted for the Pulp City range, and we are very pleased to be able to give her a new sculpt. Coupled with her new sculpt, Androida's storyline continues to evolve, and the new mini comes with upgraded rules making her a Level 2 Supreme and the first character with the new Field Commander Power (think Leader-lite).

Dr. Warlock joins Androida as the second of our new releases this month. Dr. Warlock is one of the Supreme Genesis characters which were created thanks to our first Kickstarter. Thought-up by the inimitable Drew Wood, this incarnation of his character has inherited mysterious power which he is using to protect Pulp City in its time of need.

NEW RELEASES FOR PULP CITY: Bigfoot & Pixels

NEW RELEASES

Great news for Pulp Citizens – we have just added six new packs to the web-store. This sees Pulp City return to a more regular release schedule, and we will announce the planned calendar for further new releases soon – there will be some surprises, including the return of some familiar faces!

Bigfoot (click for link)

Bigfoot is a very hard-hitting Infiltrator; mounted on a 40 mm base and packing Trump Strength 6, he can wreak havoc with your foes and is an ideal addition to a Hero Team.

Pixels

Pixels (which come as a pack of 3 Pixels and a Mega Pixel!) come in 5 different colours and are Exclusive Minions which start the game in play with Vector, who can then Summon extra Pixels if needed, replacing them almost as quickly as they are lost! They give bonuses depending on whether they are attached to a Friendly model (defensive bonus) or Enemy model (offensive bonus). In addition, 3 small Pixels can be combined to a single Mega Pixel, allowing Vector to then Summon up to two more Pixels!

Pixels are available in the following colours (shown in blue above; all minis in the pack are the same colour)

Neon Green (link)

Spotlights on the Web-site

Just a heads up to say that we have started posting weekly 'Spotlight' articles to the web-site (currently every Friday).

Each Spotlight is a taster intro which looks at a specific Supreme or pair such as the upcoming Father Oak and Acorn, giving a brief taste of who they are or how they came to be, and a tactical overview of their capabilities as well as synergies that may be useful including less obvious ones.

Jade Hawk has been the most recent example, but be sure to check them out!

Pulp City Reviews On Brummie's Wargaming Blog

The excellent Brummie's Wargaming Blog has been running reviews of a few core Pulp City products this week.

Brummie's reviews (click headings for links):

They are a great introduction and overview of the 3 products, and are worth checking out if you would like to find out more!

Pulp City SE Kickstarter Final Hours

As I type this there are approximately 32 hours to go for the Pulp City SE Kickstarter project, and we have been awed by the tremendous response of our backers.

Based on the support the project has had so far, Maciej has commissioned a number of sculpts before we conclude, which would not have happened without the positive response we have seen. As well as Cro Mag and Soul Golem, sculpts have been created for other minis unlocked as stretch goals, and work continues on yet more as we look toward delivery in a few months.

Rosie 'Baby' Rude (top) is another Powerhouse, an independent Hero who has possibly the best Knockback Actions in the game; excellent for control of objectives.

Below Rosie is Amok, a martial artist whose body houses a spirit of rage-fueled violence; he attempts to use meditative techniques to quell the anger within, but more often that rage spills out. Amok can feature for The Way, but also can give in to his darker side.

Then we have Grimm Lee Chan; a Grimm who has become fascinated by chop-socky movies and their stars. His sense of honour has drawn him towards The Way. All backers at Supreme level and above receive Grimm Lee Chan for free.

Next up is the Toxic Grimmvenger. An unfortunate Grimm whose body has been further mutated following a toxic spill. That accident left him with dangerous powers which Grimmsham (the human leader of the Grimm) uses to sow terror among hapless Citizens.

Finally there are Grimminions; the tiniest examples of the Grimm species, these little critters are everywhere that other Grimm go, and can be a terrible nuisance when found in large numbers.

Pulp City SE Kickstarter - Final 7 Days

Pulp City: Supreme Edition -- Kicktraq MiniAs I type this we a 7 days and a few hours from the end of the Pulp City Supreme Edition Kickstarter project. It has been an amazing journey for the Pulp Monsters crew, and has provoked developments for the KS delivery period as well as future developments for the game.

We are currently just over $82,000 with just under 400 backers. We have one or two more surprises to come before the project ends, so keep an eye out for further updates and news.

Pulp City SE: Roles

The studio version of Tanuki
One of the new things we have added to Pulp City SE are Roles.

Roles are intended to work as a shorthand for players to indicate what kind of function a model has in-game, while also reflecting this through mechanics.

The eight Roles are:
Leader: Your boss model; capable of boosting the capability of the team, and of holding their own in a fight.
Powerhouse: The big guys; the hardest-hitting model in a team; they don't work well without the support of their Team to fuel their AP (Action Point) needs.
Brawlers: The base-to-base specialists; roll more dice against Targets in BtB.
Blasters: The range specialists; roll more dice against Targets at distance/outside of BtB.
Tanks: The tough guys; extra dice to Defend, and can take hits for Team-mates.
Support: Buffing and AP deliverers.
Speeders: The fastest models in the game; they can move more often than other models.
Infiltrators: They deploy almost anywhere on the board; these sneaky guys are useful for targeting weaker models in the back-line, and are fairly self-sufficient when it comes to AP.

So basically now it should be quicker to figure out the mix of models you want. Assuming most games are between 8 to 12 Levels, then that would probably be around 5-9 models, so most Teams might struggle to cover every Role, and therefore it is about finding a mix that suits your game-play. Not enough Support, and you may lack for AP. If you go all-Brawlers, Blasters, Tanks, and Powerhouse, then you may lack the AP you want to be effective.

Pulp City SE: Actions & Powers

Yeti - © Pulp Monsters 2013
I plan to do a few brief articles ahead of the Kickstarter, outlining some key changes we have planned for Pulp City Supreme Edition.

Anyone who has looked through the Open Beta version will be aware of the changes, although the Open Beta phase has allowed us to refine some mechanics further.

One of the key things is we have tried to simplify the 'wall of text' that faced players when using the characters. To that end we have created 'Action Bars' that serve as a kind of gaming algebra or keyword recipe, but much easier to read than any kind of mathematics!

Basically the Action Bar says how an Action works, and what happens if it succeeds, breaking things down into key words. Some examples:
Damage 1 reduces the HP of the Target by 1
Knockback 4 moves the Target 4 inches directly away from the Attacker
Stun causes the Target to have the Stunned Condition

So Actions and outcomes of Actions are simplified. We have also largely attempted to do the same with Powers. A few were always going to be wordy, but we have tried to make each Power useful and mostly unique, while retaining a sense of flavour that suits the intended game-play of the character.

The upshot is that we have condensed gaming data down from two card sides to one (the other side now serving as your Recruitment or Team-building data). There is also no need to refer to a long list of Skills; the relevant features are folded into Attribute values, Movement Type, Actions and Powers.

More tomorrow!

Pulp City Supreme Edition Kickstarter is Coming...

(Not the official Pulp City KS logo!)
After almost two years of work (twenty two months by my reckoning), we are now very close to launching the Pulp City SE Kickstarter!

Those who are familiar with the Pulp City Facebook page or the Citizens of Pulp City Facebook group may already be aware of the news, but I thought ahead of the launch I would post some news for those that do not yet know that it is coming.

Pulp Monsters is only a very small company founded by Maciej, ably assisted by Melvin, Devon and myself; it is a labour of love to the hobby and is not some all-conquering gaming monolith of a business. Moving and evolving the game is a big undertaking, which is why we have decided that a Kickstarter is the best fit to do that. What we have in mind is to draw upon everything learned in the past six years to make the best game that we feel we can. If the Kickstarter succeeds we will do just that!

If we exceed our target we can fill some gaps in the minis line quite quickly to cut down on the wait that fans of some Factions have for the 'big guy' Powerhouse models, as well as finally unleashing the Grimm as a Faction in their own right.

Our initial target goal will I believe be modest enough to achieve success, while we are confident that if it is met, we can produce a brand-spanking new hardback book, as well as updating the game cards for every existing Supreme and Minion to meet the evolved rules.

Over the next few days I plan to give further details, a lot of which have been on the Facebook page but recognizing that not everyone uses that social network.

Welcome To Pulp City

Some of the Supremes that inhabit Pulp City
The blog has been running for some time now, and while there are over 100 people Following, I realised it has been quite some time since I offered any kind of overview of the game for those who may like the look of the minis, but are unfamiliar with Pulp City the game.

I am particular going to talk about the game in context of Pulp City Supreme Edition (also known as Pulp City SE).

Pulp City - Super-powered Action

Pulp City began life as a game of super-powered action and has grown to encompass a range of somewhere around 100 minis and counting (just look above for some of the offical paint-jobs for some of the minis).

The minis represent Supremes (the super-powered Heroes and Villains of the game) and their Minions (think goons, robots, and other henchman types of things).

The game has a ton of influences. From comic books and super-hero movies; pulp novels; 80's action movies and action TV; fantasy stories; science fiction; wuxia and martial arts movies; and much more besides.

It is a game with something for everyone, and a game that has tons of scope to build the kind of team you want. If you don't like playing a specific Sub-faction (like Heavy Metal; Blood Watch; Ulthar; Necroplane  etc.), then just play as Heroes or Villains.

Pulp City - All Action Skirmish

The game is built around the idea of Supremes (and to a lesser extent Minions) being able to to lots of things, but placing the choice of what they do on the controlling player.

Teams are made up of as few as two models and basically can play up to any mutually agreed level.

Games are fast paced with lots happening even in the first Round.

Models can act (Activate) more than once per Round, meaning games are dynamic. Pretty much any terrain on the board can be trashed as titanic battles take place - the game environment is truly interactive.

Players alternate Activations back and forth, and some actions allow reaction to the opposing players Actions - there is very little down time in real terms.

Plots encourage models to move to achieve objectives. This is no game of static gun-lines, but of decisive action.

There may be no other game where you can see a character like Silverager pick up a hapless enemy Supreme, perform his Spinebreaker Action, then hurl the victim at yet another enemy!

Supremes fire energy blasts; throw cars across the battlefield; run at enemies at break-neck speed  climb walls and whatever else we can devise as designers.

Pulp City is a sandbox where anything and everything can happen.

Pulp City Teams

Pulp City is a permissive game; Teams can be made from Sub-factions (for analogy think Avengers;  Justice League; X-Men; Brotherhood of Mutants; Sinister Six; etc.), or can simply be a lose alliance of your favourite Heroes or Villains from the wide range of Supremes Pulp City has to offer.

A Team could be formed of models from a single Sub-faction like from the Jade Cult shown here - then certain options come into play; for example, taking the Jade Cult Leader (Green Emperor) allows you to take up to 3 Terror Cotta Warriors in your Team. Whenever Green Serpent takes to the field, at least a couple of Ninjas are always in tow. And if you have enough Minion points to spare (Minion Levels), then you could more Ninjas for a horde of assassins!

Any Questions?

If anyone has any questions about the game, I would be more than happy to answer them, just post as a comment below!

New SE Card Preview - Crimson Oni

This was shown on the Pulp City website last week; the is probably quite close to how the final cards will look. The plan is that the new cards will be available as a bundle at near to cost price to make it easier for people to replace their existing cards. we know it will be a commitment to change over, but we do feel it is worth it, that the game is more accessible in terms of rules, and plays faster and more dynamically.

Pulp City Open Beta Is Here (Almost!)

One of the new cards!
Sometime today, the Open Beta version of Pulp City *should* be launched.

The downloads should be available from the web-site (web-site link here) later today, so please check it out.

So what is it about? What is this Open Beta? Well this link to some recent Editorial Eyes can give some background as to how we got here.

In a nutshell however we are recreating the Pulp City rules; we hope to make them as action-packed as ever, and hopefully more so. We hope we have made a faster and more stream-lined game with some really fun and cool features. We wanted to rebuild the game so that players did not have to study walls of Action text to play, but instead using some basic 'building block' mechanics can quickly and intuitively get into the game.

From testing we feel it plays faster. There is a lot of depth from team selection to how you use your models, and it will soon be clear there is no perfect formula as to what models you choose (although Leaders and Powerhouses will be key to most play-styles in my opinion!).

The Open Beta is a no-frills document (the full rules with lavish lay-out, art and fluff will follow later this year), designed to allow players to pick up what is happening and dive in. My understanding is that other companies have done something similar to keep their players informed of where things are moving.

So if you play Pulp City or want to give it a try, look for those downloads later today!

Pulp Monsters Editorial Eye(s) & Progress

Maciej has published the second in a series of Editorial Eye posts as we march towards the Open Beta phase of the Pulp City update: Pulp City Supreme Edition.

The article can be found here (click for link), with a preview of a Supreme slated to appear later in the year.

On my own progress, I am diving into the Doc Cosmos vs. Hendybadger Challenge, so hopefully that remains on course.

Pulp City SE Card Preview

The Editorial Eye on the Pulp City/Pulp Monsters web-site (link here) has just shown the first unveiled preview of the new Pulp City SE cards.

We have been working very hard on the SE edition for the past year, to make the game as good as it can be, and to get all of the characters performing as we feel they should in the game, while hopefully still retaining that special Pulp City flavour.

This side of the card is the recruitment side and lays out who the character is (this is Tritonious); what Role he has (Brawler - excellent in close combat); hos Origin (Nature in this case); his Level (1); how much AP he adds to the Pool each new Round (+1 AP); how many Minion Levels he brings (0); what Faction he is (Hero/Villain); any Sub-factions or restrictions (in this case Tritonious cannot be in a Team with any Ulthar models - Ulthar have the snazzy symbol beneath that red struck through circle).
